An effective AI roleplay prompt is not a complete plot summary. It is the first unstable moment of a story: something has changed, two characters want different things, and a decision cannot be postponed. A simple AI roleplay prompt framework
Build the opening from four parts: character, relationship, disruption, and choice. For example: “A meticulous royal archivist who distrusts you discovers that your name appears in a forbidden prophecy. Guards are already searching the library. He asks whether you will run with him or surrender.”
The prompt identifies who is present, why the interaction matters, what changed, and what the user can do next. It does not dictate the ending.

How to keep the roleplay moving
Respond with one decision and one useful detail. Instead of writing only “What happened?”, try: “I lock the archive door and place the prophecy on the desk. ‘Start with why my name is there.’” This gives the character an action, a tone, and a specific question to answer.
Avoid controlling the other character's thoughts or resolving every conflict in one reply. Leave space for reaction. When a scene slows down, introduce a consequence, deadline, discovery, or difficult choice rather than replacing the entire premise.
